Just a Glimpse

We have been super busy this past week.  Jason took a week off of work and brought in some reinforcements to knock out some things.  I am going to break down the progress in a few posts!

The before of the front of the house…

100_3560

The after…. I love it…the name of the paint is LaFonda Sagebrush, which we now refer to as…LaFonda!  It took 31 gallons of LaFonda to paint this ol house!

We pulled out a lot of our landscaping and are going to re do a lot of it in the next couple of weeks. We also have put the black shutters and

painted the door black.  (I will post it soon!) This was a beast of a project! We taped off everything and Jason sprayed it on.  My

dad and I went behind and brushed where it was too thick.  It took 2 days to prep and one day to paint.  SO GLAD to have this project behind us.

And, you can’t even tell the bricks were different!

One more glimpse…

this is our master bedroom with the new floor! I am so pumped about the floor.

We are going to put it through the entire house. Eventually, at least! We chose laminate because of the durability and

because we wanted to put it in the WHOLE house! Emery has quite a few allergies and we wanted all carpet GONE!

I will update more later…

The Dition..our uver house…. and other ways of saying our life at the moment!

Bradley has named our Addition, our uver house (say like upper but insert a v sound!).

He has gotten really good at giving the tour.  It goes something like this….. dis is our garage (grage) where de cars go…..dis is dee ballwing alwey (bowling alley otherwise known as the hallway)…dis is where my mommy and daddy will sweep (sleep)…..dis is de shower.  And there is your tour!

Things are moving along. Fairly well, but never as fast as we would like.  We really stalled out getting some inspections passed, but we finally did!  They started with the brick last week and the drywall as well.  It is finally starting to take shape.

We decided to brick it fully with brick that does not match in color but is close in size.  We are planning on painting the brick, but have evidently caused quite the stir in the neighborhood when we put two different shades of brick on the house and a whole new roof, when the one we had was fairly new.  We have a neighbor and he was full of questions!  He had renovated our home before we bought it, so he feels invested.  Not invested like us, as in, he does not pay the mortgage! I really wanted to say we are keeping it this way, but I think I am too prideful to even let people think for a moment that this is the desired effect I am going for in my home!

Jason and various members of our family are going to be laying our flooring and tile next week.  Jason and I are going to start painting the brick this weekend.  My dad, who has been A-MA-ZING, has been pressure washing the house and pulling out landscaping.  SOOOOOOOOO EXCITED to get these things going!!!!

So without further needless writing, I present the addition……Month 2……..

This is the bowling alley!  I have two ideas of what to do with this space.  Either hang wainscoating like this,

or this or a combination of the two!

100_3515

Our view from the doorway….

100_3516

Our FANCY ceiling….Not really, but hey we did add it in last minute….

100_3519

The tub.  I opted for non jetted.  The wall to the right is going to be cut down to the same height as the tub and will extend into

the shower as a bench.  Then, we will put frameless glass up to separate the two spaces…

100_3523

Ol’ two tone house….Isn’t it beautiful (insert sarcasm..)

Can you believe people think we would actually keep it like this?? Makes me laugh!

100_3525

The other view. Our last big project is re surfacing the driveway and extending it all the way to the barn.  FULL COURT BASKETBALL COURT!!!!

100_3528

The uver side of de house….sorry….the other side of the house!

100_3524

These were my final choices…..which one do you think I chose???? The grey/taupe or the brown/taupe?

You will have to tune in to see……

The Addition Continued

So we are about week three or four into the addition and things have gone fairly smoothly.  We are in the process of roofing, roughing in electrical and plumbing, and putting in the HVAC.  Pretty basic stuff.  I need to give a shout out to my hubs.  He is rockin it as our GC.  He is working SOOO hard for our fam right now and juggling a LOT.  It isn’t like things are not crazy busy at work for him with a new campus opening, a new service starting, a small group study, and mobilizing to send 2 teams global.  On top of that he is getting quotes from contractors, manning the budget, making friends at LOWE’S because he practically lives there and trying to do some of the grunt work himself.  He is a rock and I am so, so proud of him.

Our lates snafu, if you will, involves what we are going to put on the exterior of the house.  Originally, we were planning on getting the same size of brick and then painting it all.  I know people cringe when they hear that, but it is not the prettiest brick and it saw its last day in 1976 so pressing on… but even finding the size is proving a challenge.  Our next option, is to add stacked stone around the bottom of the addition and around the porch and front door and then hardie board around the top of the addition.  Then, we will paint the brick and hardie board.  I want the house to look updated not piece mill so I am trying to be smart.  Any ideas??

Here is the grand tour of the addition:

100_3419

This is from the back doorway of the house, looking out my extremely long, but necessary hallway.

I am seeing some great games of cornhole and bowling for the fam.

Seriously, any ideas on how to decorate this space? I have a few….

100_3420

This is the doorway into the Master bedroom…. not much to look at yet…

100_3421

This is the bathroom.  To the left will be the vanity, to your right a big walk in shower (with 2 showerheads. this is one of a few splurges for us), the tub is beside the shower,

potty room and the closet.

100_3423

The second doorway you see is for our closet.  We decided to use a pocket door to maximize space.

100_3427

Ahh, the garage…. we decided to go bigger once we got started to make sure our vehicles will always fit…

100_3428

Here is the hallway from the garage….

The connecting point.

Seriously, God has been so gracious to us during this process.  We have had some godly men at our home and I have been so thankful for how they have worked, how they treat us and even how they

like my dog.  We have had a few funnies, such as the monsoon that came through when we had no covering on the roof, so it was basically, raining in our playroom window.

We had no dry towels after that….

We are hoping that the addition will be completed by the first week of October.  We will see……

Let the games begin….

Or in this case, our addition.  If you have read this blog or know us, you remember that we bought a 1979 rancher back in September in order to have a bigger yard for the kids.  The house is around 2000 square feet currently and has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths.  They had converted the garage into a back hallway, laundry room, office and bonus room.  Jason and I put the kids in the 3 bedrooms and have been existing in the office.  No closet, no bathroom.  It has been a challenge, but after going to Africa in February, not one that I let myself feel sorry for, or at least not very often!

When we bought it, we knew we wanted to add on a master bedroom and bathroom off of what was the garage.  We really debated back and forth about a carport or garage.  After much research, discussion and advice seeking, we decided to add on a garage.  So, 9 months later, we have finally started our addition.

The first order of business was to remove a huge maple tree that just happened to be where our garage was going to go.

100_3198

Here is the tree that we knew had to come down. SO sad to lose a big, old tree! But, I want a garage, so there you go.

100_3196

We knew this tree needed some TLC, but when the tree guy looked at it, he recommended we cut it down because of extensive damage done to it by a WOODPECKER of all things.  I was so upset at this.  I loved this big Sugar Maple, the shade it gave the deck and how it framed the back yard.  But, one big storm and we could have this puppy on our roof, so it was a no brainer.

100_3210

Bye, Bye pretty tree.

100_3211

It was amazing to watch how quickly this tree fell.  The tree guy, just hacked at it with a chainsaw, one limb at a time until all that was left was the trunk. It reminded me of how long it takes to build something that matters, like a reputation, trust, love, a marriage, friendships….  and then with a careless word, action or inaction, it is stripped down until all the health and growth is gone.  What was once beautiful, is now just a shadow of what it once was.  It took a mere fraction to take down what had been growing for over 30 years.

100_3215

And boy, what a mess was left behind.  At least until they picked it up and put it in the massive mulcher.

The next day, our concrete guys came to prepare the footers.  Just know that my lack of construction lingo knowledge will leave me using words like “guys” and “stuff” and “mulcher.”

HGTV I am not.

Needless to say, the kids have been glued to the action in the back yard.  Here is a picture I saw repeated continually throughout the day.

100_3225

100_3228

You may notice that Bradley is ready to help.  He has on his safety goggles and all 112 tools and tool pieces have been brought from his room into the playroom.  I had to stop them, MORE THAN ONCE, from hammering on the windows! 100_3233

Bradley is sporting the SAFETY PATROL orange helmet that we wore for our 6th grade trip to Washington DC in 1986.  Signatures and everything! We are all about the safety here at Casa Stewart!  Why LuLu kept this hat for over 20 years is beyond me, but the kids have loved adding it to the dress up bin!

I could seriously sop Emery up with a biscuit, she is so stinking cute!  Except I don’t really like sopping, but you get the picture!

100_3229

Isn’t she lovely?

100_3230

These poor men worked in the 95 degree weather for hours.  I must admit I had no idea if I was supposed to offer them drinks, let them use our facilities or bring out cut up oranges.  What is proper construction worker at my home etiquette?  I am southern for heaven’s sake so I don’t want to offend!

100_3235

Here is the outline of the addition.  We are roughly adding about 1100 square feet with the garage.  We, as in Jason, is our general contractor.  We are subbing out all the work, to save a few dollars.  Or to bring about as much chaos as possible, you decide!  I am not making any predictions as to how long this will take.  I am praying for October.

You can also see the tree is gone.  We lost some serious shade in the middle of the day, which makes me so sad.

I will be updating the progress of our little ol addition.  Riveting stuff, I tell you!

Progress??

I interrupt moving to bring you updated photos of what has transpired the last 4 days.

We loaded up one house and unloaded it into another.

We are so excited about making this house ours and adding on in the future. Jason and I are currently in the “office” with no closets and no bathroom close! We are adjusting to life with 2 bathrooms and sharing one with the kids. Bradley is in the master since it has a bathroom and as he gets older, he will need to be separate from the girls! That was an interesting conversation when I explained it to the girls! There are just no good words when talking about privates!

Not only did we move on Friday, close on 2 houses, we had our women’s event at church that I co-chair. I am an overachiever at heart, evidently.

GNO was a lot of fun. We had around 400 women enjoy a night of fellowship and connecting with each other. We had fun inflatables, chocolate fountains, line dancing and zumba, a photo booth and games everywhere. We could have been a scene in the movie, The Women, because no men were around! We also had encouraged women to invite thier friends who were not connected to a church or more importantly, to GOD and we had many first time visitors. Our women invited and it was a blast!

Back to moving.
Here are a few pictures of what my house looks like 2 days after moving in. Just keeping it real.
( I have more to add, but blogger is being finicky.)

This is currently the office area. The wall the desk is on will eventually be opened up into
the living room on the other side. This will be our dining room someday.

This is the breakfast area and kitchen. We have our dining room table in here for
now to seat as many people as we can.
Emery’s room. It is begging for paint.
The playroom. It is off the back hallway where we
enter. It is a garage conversion and has great light!
Our lovely master bedroom is off of this room.

We have a lot to do, so I will keep you posted on our progress!
